Lessons With Dad

   Last year I went to our statewide technology conference. After sitting in on some of the presentation, I walked away in awe of how cool it would be to bring some of those games into my classroom.(Let me add, before this conference I had never heard of game based learning or gamifying the classroom.) As I started to look and see what games would benefit my curriculum I started to focus towards a game based learning approach. I started to look at a local market around Madison, WI called Filament Games . They have a bunch of games aligned to the CCSS. Most of the games are geared towards middle school and higher education but I did purchase a couple fo the games to use in my classroom for science and math.    It just so happened that not long after the conference my school district was starting a book study on Explore Like A Pirate . This is my first year taking the plunge and diving head first into gamifying my classroom. In this blog I will share some of my successes and failures I encounter along the way. I will also share how I am gamifying my class and what it consists of on a day to day basis. My hope is other educators can use this to help them along their journey in their classrooms.

This page is designed for me to share all of my successes and failures of being a father. I have seen a lot of women write about things on blogs but I have not seen many blogs written by men on this topic. I hope to bring to light that no child or parent is perfect. One thing I have learned through this whole process so far is I have a long way to go!

   Before I dive in to my fatherly duties and the classroom, I figured it might be helpful for you to know a little about myself first. I am in my tenth year of being a male elementary school teacher in Wisconsin, that's right a male elementary teacher! I surprise myself sometimes when I hear those words come out and the fact that I have survived for ten years is shocking!    I come from a very close family and am the youngest with an older brother and sister. I have been married to my lovely wife for almost five years now. We have a son who will be four this summer and and a daughter who will soon be turning two. To say our lives are crazy and hectic is an understatement. My wife is a nurse and works 12 hour night shifts. For some reason hospitals do not close on weekends so every other weekend I am running daddy day care from home.
